When to Seek Help

Anxiety becomes a clinical concern when it is persistent, difficult to control, and interferes with your daily life for six months or more. You should seek professional evaluation if anxiety is preventing you from doing things you want or need to do — whether that is going to work, maintaining relationships, driving, or sleeping. Physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest tightness that occur repeatedly without a clear medical cause are also important signals. Many people with anxiety disorders wait years before seeking help, often attributing symptoms to stress or personality. Early intervention produces the best outcomes.

Our Treatment Approach

At DLH Consulting, anxiety treatment begins with a comprehensive 60-minute psychiatric evaluation. Your provider will review your symptoms, their duration and severity, your medical history, any medications you take, your family history of mental health conditions, and your treatment goals. From there, your provider will recommend an evidence-based treatment plan tailored to your specific type of anxiety and your preferences. Most anxiety disorders respond well to a combination of medication and therapy. Our PMHNPs specialize in prescribing and managing anxiety medications, and can coordinate with your therapist or refer you to a licensed therapist if needed. We monitor your progress at every appointment and adjust your treatment plan as needed. Telehealth appointments are available for all anxiety treatment services, making it easy to receive consistent care from home.

What to Expect

Your first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation lasting approximately 60 minutes. You will discuss your symptoms, history, and goals with your provider. If medication is recommended, most anxiety medications take 4-6 weeks to reach full effectiveness. You will have follow-up appointments every 4-8 weeks initially to monitor your response and make adjustments. As your symptoms stabilize, follow-up intervals typically extend to every 1-3 months. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within the first 6-12 weeks of treatment. You do not need to be in crisis to seek help — if anxiety is interfering with your quality of life, that is reason enough to reach out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between anxiety and an anxiety disorder?

Anxiety is a normal emotion that everyone experiences. An anxiety disorder is when anxiety becomes excessive, persistent, and interferes with daily life for six months or more. If anxiety is stopping you from doing things you want or need to do, it's worth speaking with a professional.

Can anxiety be treated with medication alone?

Medication can be very effective for anxiety and is often combined with therapy for the best outcomes. SSRIs and SNRIs are commonly prescribed first-line medications. Some patients do well with medication alone; others prefer therapy alone or a combination of both.

How long does it take for anxiety medication to work?

Most anxiety medications (SSRIs/SNRIs) take 4-6 weeks to reach full effectiveness. Some medications like buspirone take 2-4 weeks. Your provider will monitor your response and adjust as needed.

Do I need a referral to see a PMHNP for anxiety?

No referral is needed. Complete our intake forms online at dlhconsultant.com/new-patients and our intake coordinator will reach out within 2 business days to schedule your first appointment.

Does insurance cover anxiety treatment?

Yes. Most major insurance plans — including MassHealth, Medicare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and others — cover outpatient mental health services including anxiety treatment. Contact your insurer to verify your specific benefits.
