Home / Mood Disorders Treatment
Mood disorders affect over 21 million American adults and encompass a range of conditions beyond depression and bipolar disorder.
Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions primarily affecting emotional state. They range from persistent depression to cycles of depression and mania, and include conditions that may not fit neatly into one diagnosis.
DLH Consulting provides expert evaluation to accurately diagnose your specific mood disorder and develop a personalized, evidence-based treatment plan.
A mood disorder evaluation is warranted when persistent changes in mood — whether depression, irritability, elevated mood, or cycling — are interfering with your daily functioning for weeks or months at a time. Mood disorders are among the most common and most treatable mental health conditions, yet they are often under-diagnosed because people minimize their symptoms or attribute them to stress, personality, or circumstance. If your mood feels beyond your control, if you experience episodes of significant depression or unusual elevation, if irritability is damaging your relationships, or if you feel chronically flat or empty, a comprehensive evaluation can provide clarity and a path forward.
Accurate diagnosis is critical for mood disorders because the treatment differs substantially between unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, PMDD, and other conditions. Our PMHNPs conduct thorough mood history interviews, review family psychiatric history, and assess for all possible mood disorder diagnoses before recommending treatment. GeneSight testing is particularly valuable for mood disorders, helping identify which antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotics are most likely to be effective based on your genetic profile. We also consider thyroid function, hormonal factors, and medication interactions as potential contributors to mood symptoms.
Treatment timelines for mood disorders vary depending on the diagnosis and severity. Most antidepressants take 4-6 weeks to reach full effectiveness. Mood stabilizers may take 2-4 weeks. We schedule follow-up appointments every 4-8 weeks initially to monitor your response and make adjustments. Finding the right medication and dose is a collaborative process — we stay with you through this process and do not give up on finding an effective treatment plan. Many people with mood disorders achieve full remission and sustained wellness with the right care.

We accept most major plans including:
Persistent depressed mood or loss of interest for at least two weeks with significant functional impairment.
Chronic low-grade depression lasting at least two years.
Cycling between depressive and manic or hypomanic episodes.
Chronic mood fluctuations with hypomanic and depressive symptoms below the threshold for full episodes.
Severe mood symptoms in the week before menstruation that significantly interfere with daily life.
Severe, chronic irritability and frequent temper outbursts in children and adolescents.
Accurate diagnosis requires a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified provider. Many mood disorders share overlapping symptoms, so a detailed review of your history, symptom pattern, and family history is essential to make the right diagnosis and choose the right treatment.
Yes. Mood and anxiety disorders frequently co-occur. Approximately 50% of people with depression also have an anxiety disorder. Your provider will evaluate for all relevant conditions and develop a treatment plan that addresses all of them.
For mild conditions, therapy and lifestyle modifications may be sufficient. For moderate to severe mood disorders, medication is typically recommended — often in combination with therapy. Bipolar disorder almost always requires medication.
PMS involves physical and emotional symptoms in the week before menstruation. PMDD is more severe — causing significant mood symptoms (depression, anxiety, irritability, hopelessness) that substantially interfere with daily functioning. PMDD is treatable with SSRIs and hormonal interventions.
Yes. All recognized mood disorders are covered by major insurance plans under mental health parity laws.
