Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which mood disorder I have?

Accurate diagnosis requires a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified provider. Many mood disorders share overlapping symptoms, so a detailed review of your history, symptom pattern, and family history is essential to make the right diagnosis and choose the right treatment.

Is it possible to have both a mood disorder and an anxiety disorder?

Yes. Mood and anxiety disorders frequently co-occur. Approximately 50% of people with depression also have an anxiety disorder. Your provider will evaluate for all relevant conditions and develop a treatment plan that addresses all of them.

Can mood disorders be managed without medication?

For mild conditions, therapy and lifestyle modifications may be sufficient. For moderate to severe mood disorders, medication is typically recommended — often in combination with therapy. Bipolar disorder almost always requires medication.

What is PMDD and how is it different from PMS?

PMS involves physical and emotional symptoms in the week before menstruation. PMDD is more severe — causing significant mood symptoms (depression, anxiety, irritability, hopelessness) that substantially interfere with daily functioning. PMDD is treatable with SSRIs and hormonal interventions.

Is mood disorder treatment covered by insurance?

Yes. All recognized mood disorders are covered by major insurance plans under mental health parity laws.
