Appointment Availability & Wait Times
What to expect when scheduling your first psychiatric appointment and how to be seen sooner.
How Long Will I Wait for an Appointment?
Access to psychiatric care across Massachusetts is strained. Wait times at hospital-affiliated systems commonly run three to six months, and some practices have closed their panels entirely. DLH Consulting maintains a team of 17 providers specifically so that new patients can be seen without a months-long wait.
Our Typical Timeline
Online, by phone, by mail, or in person
To review your needs and match you with a provider
Availability varies by provider and whether you choose telehealth
Ways to Be Seen Sooner
Choose telehealth. Telehealth appointments generally have wider availability than in-person slots, because they are not limited by room capacity. All 17 of our providers offer telehealth to any Massachusetts resident.
Stay flexible on provider. If you do not have a specific provider preference, our coordinator can match you with whoever has the earliest opening.
Submit your intake packet completely. Incomplete packets are the single most common cause of delay. Missing insurance information or an unsigned consent form stops the process until we can reach you.
Ask about cancellations. Let the coordinator know if you can accept a short-notice appointment. Cancellations open up regularly.
Why We Can Usually Move Faster Than Hospital Systems
Large hospital systems route new psychiatric patients through centralized intake departments that serve many clinics at once. As an independent outpatient practice, our intake coordinator works directly with our own providers schedules; there is no queue behind other departments. Our team of 17 clinicians also means we are not dependent on a single prescribers availability.
A Note About Urgency
DLH Consulting is an outpatient practice and cannot provide emergency or crisis care. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, 24/7) or the MA Behavioral Health Help Line at (833) 773-2445. These services can connect you to same-day crisis support.
