About Tufts Health Plan

Tufts Health Plan is a Massachusetts-based not-for-profit health plan and a Point32Health company (merged with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care). Headquartered in Canton, MA, Tufts Health Plan serves commercial, Medicare, and MassHealth members throughout Massachusetts and other New England states. Tufts has earned consistent top national ratings for member experience and clinical quality, and has a strong reputation for behavioral health access and parity compliance.

Tufts Health Plan Plans We Accept

Tufts Health Plan commercial plans — employer-sponsored and individual plans including HMO, PPO, and tiered network plans.

Tufts Health Medicare Preferred (HMO) — Medicare Advantage HMO plan. Member services: 1-800-701-9000. Strong mental health coverage.

Tufts Health Together (MassHealth Managed Care) — Tufts manages MassHealth (Medicaid) benefits for qualifying members. Behavioral health covered at no cost-sharing for most MassHealth members.

Tufts Health RITogether — Rhode Island Medicaid plan for members near the MA/RI border.

Tufts Behavioral Health Coverage

Tufts Health Plan manages behavioral health benefits directly (not carved out to a separate company), which provides a more integrated experience. Most Tufts commercial plans cover outpatient psychiatric evaluations and medication management at standard specialist or primary care copay levels. Telehealth is covered at parity with in-person visits under most plans. Tufts has a dedicated behavioral health team — 1-800-208-9565 — for questions about substance use and mental health benefits.

Tufts MassHealth Coverage

Tufts Health Together members (MassHealth Managed Care) have comprehensive behavioral health coverage including outpatient psychiatric evaluation and medication management, typically with no copay. If you are a Tufts MassHealth member and unsure of your benefits, call 1-888-257-1985 or contact our office for assistance.

Psychiatric Services Typically Covered

Coverage varies by plan, but most plans cover the following services at DLH Consulting:

  • Psychiatric Evaluation — Comprehensive initial assessment (approximately 60 minutes)
  • Medication Management — Ongoing prescription monitoring, adjustments, and follow-up visits
  • Mental Health Counseling — Individual therapy sessions with licensed clinicians
  • Telehealth Appointments — Secure video visits from anywhere in Massachusetts
  • GeneSight Pharmacogenomic Testing — Coverage varies significantly by plan; our team can help check eligibility

How to Verify Your Coverage

Insurance benefits vary by plan, employer, and individual circumstances. Before your first appointment, we recommend taking these steps to understand your mental health benefits:

  1. Call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance ID card
  2. Ask specifically about outpatient mental health and psychiatric services
  3. Ask whether DLH Consulting is in-network under your specific plan
  4. Ask about your deductible — how much you must pay before insurance kicks in
  5. Ask about your copay or coinsurance for mental health visits
  6. Ask whether prior authorization is required for psychiatric services
  7. Ask about telehealth coverage — most plans now cover it at the same rate as in-person

You can also contact our office and our team will be happy to help verify your benefits before your first appointment.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

  • Your insurance card (both sides)
  • A valid photo ID
  • List of current medications and dosages
  • Any prior psychiatric records or evaluations you have
  • Your primary care provider's contact information

Your Mental Health Parity Rights

Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), insurance plans that cover mental health and substance use disorder benefits must provide those benefits on terms no more restrictive than coverage for medical and surgical benefits. In practical terms, this means your copays, prior authorization requirements, and visit limits for psychiatric care should be comparable to those for medical care. If you feel your insurer is not complying with parity requirements, you can contact the Massachusetts Division of Insurance at mass.gov.
