Autism Spectrum Disorder Psychiatric Services in Dartmouth, MA

Many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience co-occurring psychiatric conditions that significantly impact quality of life. At DLH Consulting & Psychiatric Services in Dartmouth, MA, our board-certified PMHNPs provide compassionate, patient-centered psychiatric medication management for people with ASD.

Our Role in ASD Care

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition — not a psychiatric illness. We do not diagnose ASD. What we provide is expert psychiatric medication management for the mental health conditions that commonly co-occur with ASD. Studies suggest up to 70% of individuals with ASD have at least one co-occurring psychiatric condition, and many have two or more. Treating these conditions can dramatically improve daily functioning and quality of life.

Co-Occurring Conditions We Treat

Anxiety disorders — the most common co-occurring condition, affecting up to 50% of individuals with ASD. Anxiety in ASD may present through increased rigidity, behavioral outbursts, or physical complaints rather than verbal worry.

ADHD — affects attention, organization, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Both conditions are recognized as distinct but commonly overlapping neurodevelopmental conditions.

Depression — particularly common in autistic adults, often stemming from the cumulative stress of masking and navigating a neurotypical world.

OCD and repetitive behaviors — true OCD (with ego-dystonic obsessions driven by anxiety) occurs at elevated rates in ASD and may benefit from medication.

Sleep disorders — affect 50–80% of individuals with ASD, significantly impacting daytime behavior and learning.

Irritability and aggression — risperidone and aripiprazole are FDA-approved specifically for irritability associated with ASD.

Our Approach

We understand that individuals with ASD may have unique sensory sensitivities, communication styles, and medication responses. Our PMHNPs take extra time, start at lower doses when appropriate, titrate slowly, and monitor carefully. We communicate and coordinate with therapists, developmental pediatricians, and primary care providers as part of a team approach.

Telehealth Services

We offer telehealth across Massachusetts. Many ASD patients and families prefer telehealth — allowing care from a familiar, sensory-controlled environment without the challenges of travel and waiting rooms.
