Getting the Most Out of Your Telehealth Psychiatric Appointment

Telehealth has made psychiatric care available to people who previously had no access — whether due to distance, mobility, childcare, or the simple anxiety of sitting in a waiting room. Research shows that telehealth psychiatric appointments are as effective as in-person visits for most conditions. But getting the most out of them takes a little preparation.

Set Up a Private Space

Your provider can't keep what you share confidential if others can hear it. Find a room where you can close a door. If that's not possible, a parked car works well. Headphones help with both privacy and audio quality.

Test Your Tech Beforehand

Log into your provider's telehealth link 5 minutes before your appointment to check that your camera and microphone work. Poor video quality is frustrating and eats into appointment time. At DLH, each provider has their own telehealth link listed on their provider card — bookmark yours before your appointment.

Come Prepared With a Medication List

Your provider will want to know every medication and supplement you take, including doses. Write it out beforehand. Also note any side effects you've noticed since your last visit.

Write Down Your Questions

Appointments are typically 20-60 minutes depending on visit type. Having your questions written down ensures you cover what matters most to you before the time is up. Don't save your most important concern for the last minute.

Be Honest About What's Not Working

Your provider can only adjust your care based on what you share. If a medication isn't helping, if you stopped taking it, if something in your life has changed significantly — that information matters. Telehealth removes some of the barriers to honesty that in-person visits can create.
