Many patients tell us the anticipation of a first psychiatric appointment was more stressful than the appointment itself. Knowing what to expect helps. Here's a candid overview of what happens during your first visit at DLH.
Before You Arrive
You'll complete a new patient intake packet and privacy policy forms online through our patient portal. Try to fill these out at least 24 hours before your appointment — they help your provider review your history ahead of time, so the appointment itself can focus on you rather than paperwork.
The Evaluation (60 Minutes)
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Your provider will review your current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, family history, current medications, substance use, and your goals for treatment. This is a conversation, not an interrogation — your provider is building a picture of who you are, not just what's wrong.
Your Provider Will Ask About...
How long you've been experiencing your current symptoms. What's worked in the past and what hasn't. Your sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration. Relationships, work, daily functioning. And what you're hoping to get out of treatment.
You'll Leave With a Plan
By the end of the appointment, your provider will share their clinical impressions and a proposed next step — which might be starting a medication, ordering GeneSight testing, scheduling therapy, or some combination. You'll have a chance to ask questions and share any concerns before deciding how to proceed.
A Few Things to Bring
A photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications with dosages, and any previous psychiatric or medical records you have access to. Most importantly, bring your honest self — that's all your provider needs to start helping you.
